Another edition of Make a Card Monday!
Today I'm focusing on the Graduation season. High School grads, mostly because I've already got invites to 2 parties, but hey you could use it for a Prep school, College, or Master's program graduation.
It's an all-around card like a gymnast being able to do the Bars, Beam, Vault and Floor. It can accomplish it all.
I got the idea for this card from Cathy Zielske. She posted a freebie of this silhouette grad cap cut out and I KNEW I had to use it. She gives out the most unbelievable freebies. I think I've downloaded them all, even if I haven't used them all.
She is great at the beautifully simplistic designs. She's impeccable. (and no, she isn't paying me to say this. I just really like her design aesthetic and love to give others credit for their talent.)
Okay so let's get started. Here's what you're gonna need: (yes I know gonna isn't really a word but I like to write like I speak instead of like I'm writing a book. Case in point, you would never use like that many times in a sentence and I sound like a high school girl. like this. like that. k I digress)
Supplies:
- 12x12 white cardstock
- 8 1/2 x 11 colored cardstock
- 8 1/2 x 11 black cardstock
- foam dots
- pen of your choice
- grad cap die cut
Note: I used my silhouette machine to cut out my grad caps, card and envelope. You don't necessarily need a silhouette machine to make this. You could use a die cut of a grad cap and an existing card and envelope. I just went a little fancier this time cuz I was in the mood.
Here it is. The lovely card. I decided on green for the background because the two invites I've received are to Faribault School and the falcons are green.
1. Cut out your card and envelope. Note: The 5" square card has a perforated center for easier folding.
2. Print, stamp or type your front cover message. I went with "You Did It!" because that seemed an all-around message. You could also go with "You Rock!" "Congratulations" "Good Job" "Well Done"...
In case you were wondering I used the Bebas font, size 36 on my card. I used the silhouette sketch pens to get the design on my card.
3. Cut out your grad caps or pull out your graduation die cuts.
Aren't these cute? Seriously. Totally cute. I think it's the slightly rounded edges. It makes the caps seem less rigid and more fun. Kind of like adding booze to your favorite silent relative. It just kicks things up a notch. (p.s. I don't do that I'm just using it as a metaphor.)
Note: Cathy's images are much less smaller than mine. I wanted to go with "bigger is better" in this instance so I enlarged mine to the dimensions above. They aren't a specific size like 1.75 x 2.5 or anything because sometimes I just like to eyeball it.
4. Use foam dots to raise up your caps. (pun intended) Just eyeball it or get out your ruler, depending on your personality and the amount of time you have.
I don't have any black foam dots at this point so to kind of hide the fact that these white squares kind of seem visible I did this:
Just sharpie'd in the edging so they didn't stand out. (and yes that isn't a word either.)
Notice.
You see nothing.
Perfect.
Nothing from this angle either. Phew. Cuz a high school graduate is going to care.
5. Add your inside message and money, because let's face it, kids only have grad parties for a couple reasons.
Chief among those reasons are the desire to get your money. They don't really want to stand around and have to talk to people they don't know. They just want your money and free food and depending on where you live, the "party" afterwards. That party may or may not involve a keg of root beer or actual beer. Again, depending on where you live and how your parents feel about that sort of thing.
I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
I'm pretty simple so they get "Congratulations" and some moolah.
Easy peezy lemon squeezy.
Hope you liked this Monday's card. I made a handful of die cuts so when I get the next invite I just have to pick out the school color from my cardstock and cut out my card.
